Hello Band Families,
This is a long email that covers lots, rather than several short ones.
Great job to the kids who played at the basketball game last night! We helped get an exciting overtime victory. The last regular season game is tomorrow, 2/1, at 7:00 for the GOLD band, and anyone else that wants to come.
More congratulations should go out to the students that participated in Solo and Ensemble last Saturday. I heard many great performances by our band students. Pavel Spichak will be going to state as our region's trumpet soloist!
Jazz Band I - we will have practice at 7:00 tomorrow, then normal 6:35 the other 2 days thei week. Attached is an updated itinerary for this Friday (the performance time was moved up a little) If there are any parents that want to come on the bus let me know. (Or feel free to drive yourself)
Wind Ensemble will perform in chamber groups at the BHS Arts nights on February 9th and 10th. Kids are signing up for the day they would prefer. The time frame is 6:30-7:30 and parents are welcome to attend. It will be in the new commons, there will be visaul are on display and the drama department will be putting on a play after the music groups perform. Concert Band students that want to play a duet/trio/etc could also perform.
Percussion Ensemble will perform some of theit ensemble pieces next Thursday, Feb 9th from 6:30 to 7:30 as well.
March 1st - Wind Ensemble and some Percussion Ensemble students will be going to WWU in Bellingham for a clinic with their director and to listen to a rehearsal by their WInd Ensemble. We will miss the whole day of school and return around 5pm.
The next Band Booster Meeting is Monday, February 13th at 7:00. We're starting to make more and more arrangements for our Jazz Festival in May. |

Hello, and welcome back from the mid-mid-winter break. There have been changes in the basketball schedule for next week due to snow make up games.
The game scheduled on Tuesday, 1/31 will now be on MONDAY, 1/30, and the report time is 6:00, with the game starting at 6:15. It should be over about 7:45. This is the White Band.
The game scheduled for Thursday, 2/2 will now be WEDNESDAY, 2/1 and the report time is still 7:00, with the game starting at 7:30. It should be over by 9:00. This is the Gold Band.
Please contact me if the change in dates conflicts with plans you already had.
Attached are the times for students playing at Solo and Ensemble this Saturday, 1/28, at Liberty High School. Remember to dress nicely, bring a copy of your piece for the adjudicator and arrive early. (Percussion students should have gotten an email yesterday with more specific instructions)
Jazz Bands have normal rehearsals this and next week, getting ready for the trip to Poulsbo next Friday, 2/3.
Thanks! |

Hello Jazz families, First of all, we had a great trip to EWU with a few minor hiccups. Both bands and all the soloists played well, and the jazz I trombones got recognized with a Best Section award (no outstanding soloist awards were given out) The evening concert with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra was outstanding and inspiring. The snow (an snowball fight) when we returned to school was a great way to end the trip. With the late start tomorrow, and possible late start and closures the rest of the week, I wanted to let you know the plans for jazz bands. This is what I told the kids on the bus yesterday. Jazz II will be canceled if there is a late start on a M, W, or F. Mr Carter can't make it because of his student teaching obligations if we have late starts. If we have 1 or 2 hour late starts we will have Jazz I at either 7:30 or 8:30 respectively. IF YOU'RE NOT ABLE TO GET HERE SAFELY, STAY HOME, OR COME TO SCHOOL WHEN YOU CAN. The district has made tomorrow a 2 hour late start, so on Tuesday, 1/17 we'll have Jazz I at 8:30 (unless school is canceled between now and then) I recommend taking your instrument home each school day this week, as we don't know if school might be canceled the next day, or the rest of the week! Thanks, Edd George |

I hope you had a restful winter break. I did, and although as much as I'd like to have another week off, the calendar says otherwise. Here is some of what is happening in the next few weeks:
Parking Lots - the East lot will not be available for parking OR dropping students off, so Wolverine Way will be that much busier, please plan accordingly... Basketball Games: EVERYONE has a basketball game assigned this week, either Wednesday or Friday night. You can check the times and band assignments on Charms, look at the list posted in the band room. If you haven't paid for your T shirt. please do that ASAP, $5 Jazz Bands: 2 weeks until the trip to EWU and Spokane. Please pay the $210 to the accountant, and remember to set those alarm clocks 10 minutes earlier than before to deal with the East lot being closed, and trying to be in the room at 6:30, starting rehearsal at 6:35. If construction allows, I will unlock the door by the tennis courts and gym. If those are locked, try to come through the new commons. |

Great Job Jazz Bands at Crossroads mall last Tuesday night! We have just a few more performances before Winter Break. Here are the announcements for this week:
Both Wind Ensemble and Concert Band have had playing tests recently. Those grades on online, and retakes must be done by Monday at the end of tutorial. I highly encourage all students that didn't get a 90 or higher to practice the passage and come in to improve their score.
There is a Band Booster Meeting on Monday night at 7:00. All parents are welcome - we have had great participation so far this year, let's keep it up.
Our big concert is next Wednesday, December 14th. Students need to be here at 7:00, the concert will start at 7:30 and will also include Orchestra and Choir. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE PARENTS TO COME TO THE CONCERT! The groups are sounding great.
Fees - there are still a few students with missing Instrument Fees, Percussion Fees, Uniform Fees and Transportation Fees. Please let me know if you have any questions about these.
Jazz Band trip - the cost is $210, please make checks out to BHS and give them to the accountant. |

The band accompanied the BHS Wolverine Football to the Tacoma Dome on Friday night. In this photo, the band shows their affection to Kevin Rodgers, a tuba player in the band, and a member of the State Champion Wolverine Football Team. Congrats, Kevin! Congrats Football!

Hello Band Families,
We have a short week, but a full one.
Tuesday: Wind Ensemble students need to wear their concert attire as they will be performing in the Veteran's Day Assembly. (This includes Percussion Ensemble students performing as well)
Friday: Football playoff game vs Eastside Catholic. Arrive at 6:00, the game starts at 7:00. Students in the "B band" are expected to stay for the whole game, students in "A Band" are dismissed at the beginning of the 3rd quarter.
Jazz II is still looking for more members - we have a great teacher and we just want more kids to take advantage of the opportunity.
Jazz I and Wind Ensemble - remember your listening homework.
Finally, if anyone enjoys home improvement/building projects please contact me. We have a frame for a xylophone that needs some work to make it usable. I envision using some pipes and think it shouldn't be that hard, but someone might have a better idea than I have.
Thanks,
Edd Geprge |

Hello BHS Band families,
We are in a busy stretch, it will calm down soon. Great job to Wind Ensemble on the concert last night. Here are some reminders and requests regarding upcoming events: - If you have a good video of the band at the Homecoming parade or halftime show please share it with me. (I haven't seen any of the parade yet)
- Mark your calendars, the December concert date has changed to Wednesday, Dec 14.
- The next Band Booster meeting will be Monday, November 14th at 7:00. All parents are invited to come to find out more about what is happening in band. We've had great attendance and help so far this year - keep it up!
- Jazz 2 is looking for a few more students, and now is a great time to join, as they are about to start learning new music. They meet M, W, F mornings from 6:30-7:20. Interested students should talk to Mr. George. (We are really in need of piano players, and I know there are some good ones out there in our band)
- It is football playoff season. We have a game this Friday - students should be here at 6:00 in uniform. Here is what the next weeks look like:
- Nov 11 or Nov 12 we will probably have another home game
- Nov 18 or Nov 19 we will probably have an away game at Lakes HS in Tacoma. We would go to this game on school buses.
- We will not play the potential game over Thanksgiving weekend
- Dec 2 is the state title game in the Tacoma Dome, should we make it.
- Participation is required at these performances, but let me know if you have conflicts.
Thanks,
EDD GEORGE |
